This is one of the most common questions service business owners ask: should I run Google Ads or Facebook and Instagram ads? The answer depends entirely on your business model, your average ticket size, and where your customers are in the buying process.
Google Ads: Capturing Existing Demand
Google Ads puts you in front of people who are actively searching for your service right now. Someone types 'emergency plumber near me' and your ad shows up at the top. That is high-intent traffic.
Google works best for businesses with higher average ticket sizes of $200 or more, emergency or urgent services, services people actively search for, and established service areas with search volume.
The downside is cost. Competitive service keywords can run $15 to $50 or more per click. If your close rate and average job value do not support that cost per lead, Google Ads can burn cash fast.
Meta Ads: Creating New Demand
Facebook and Instagram ads are interruption-based. Your customer is scrolling through their feed, sees your ad, and thinks, 'Oh, I have been meaning to get that done.' You are creating demand rather than capturing it.
Meta works best for businesses with lower average ticket sizes where impulse decisions are common, visually compelling services like detailing or landscaping, recurring service models, and businesses that need to build brand awareness in a new market.
The advantage is cost. You can often generate leads for $5 to $20 on Meta compared to $30 to $80 on Google for the same service. But the lead quality is typically lower because the intent is lower.
The NAA Recommendation
For most service businesses, the right answer is both, deployed strategically. Use Google Ads for your highest-margin services where people are actively searching. Use Meta Ads for brand awareness, retargeting, and lower-ticket recurring services.
Start with Google if your average ticket is over $300 and your service area has decent search volume. Start with Meta if you are in a visual industry, have a strong before-and-after story, or need to build awareness in a new market.
But here is what matters more than the platform: your follow-up system. The best ads in the world are worthless if leads sit in a spreadsheet for 48 hours. Build the CRM infrastructure first, then turn on the traffic.
